Production Roles

I took the role of secondary Producer when we were making a short film for unit 17.

My primary role was to be part producer. However in the making of the film i had various other roles, such as being an actor in the film. I was also an editor, and as producer i sorted out how much it would cost to use the room for a certain amount of time, i also made sure that the actors knew the location and time and made sure they arrived on time. I was responsible for the equipment, since i booked out the equipment and brought it with me. Sometimes i would decide on the placement of the camera/ help out, if the other producer needed help.

Throughout this project i planned different things, in case something went wrong, like if some of the actors couldn't come on the day nearer to the time then i'd check with the person who owns the place when are the available dates for the place and then i would ask the actors if that would be a better day and i worked out the times and made sure it was all planned out, making sure everything was organised for filming.

If the producer needed help with think of shots to do, i would help them and have a say in it and if they needed help with setting up equipment i would try and help them.

When we went into our groups we assigned roles. I was the secondary Producer, however i also too on the roles of Actor and Editor, Jade was the Producer, an Actor and Editor, since we each had to do our own edits, Ben was an Actor and Editor and Josh was the Editor as well. Jade created a folder on the google drive for us to put the videos in and the paper work. I created a shot list, that way when we went to film we could have an idea of different shots we could do.

After doing the shot list, I then created a shooting schedule, that way we knew when we were filming, who we needed for the scene and what equipment we needed for it.
Since i was part producer i had to make sure the shot list was good and detail so when it came to filming we had ideas for different shots.

Outside of producer for the shot list i also was the cinematographer, since i would say where the camera should go and i brought the shot list and script with me and the equipment, so we were prepared and i set up the scene, laying out the tables, before everyone got their.

The shot list is normally done in a collaboration with the director and the cinematographer but in this case a producer, since the producer plans and coordinates various aspects of film production, such as selecting the script, coordinate writing, directing and editing and arranging financing. This relates to one of the job roles i wanted, cinematographer and it's also something the producer might do, since they can have a say in it.

As producer i had to plan the shooting schedule and made sure it was all organised, that way we all knew when we are meeting and the times and so on.

For the shooting schedule i had to make sure everyone could do that day and i also had to be an actor, so i had to make sure i was on time and knew the dates on the shooting schedule and make sure everyone else knew.

After completing the production schedule, i made a recce, checked the location and then worked out how much it would cost and then payed for it once all the actors agreed on the date to record.

This relates to being the producer since they work out finances, so when it come to going to the location and asking how much it costs to rent for say an hours, then i had to work that out and they might also visit the location to see if its suitable, which is what i did. A screenwriter might also check out the location with the director, so this relates to the other job i wanted to do.

As producer i checked the location out and that way i could ask how much it would cost between certain times and then work out the budget for the film and then i did the recce, so we knew the risks and how to deal with them and to see if the place is suitable or not or if its safe to film or not.

Another thing i did outside of being producer was director, since i went to go visit the location to see if it was suitable for filming and talked to the person who ran it so i knew about what we are allowed to do and what we weren't and then created a recce based on it.

After visiting the location and doing a recce for it, i did a risks and hazards list, which involved the copyright problems, whereas Josh did the other risks and hazards list, for example if someone fell over, the person who would be harmed is the actor and then they would put controls already in place.

February 1st 2019

As producer i did a risks and hazards, this way we can prevent any copyright if it had something in it, for example certain shoes with a brand on it, this way we could see what the problems were and how to approach them.

Another thing i did as director, outside of being producer was making sure the place wasn't copyrighted and that it was fine to use and made sure people didn't wear anything that might have copyrighted brands or product placement, since we do not own any of it.

On February 9th 2019 we did the filming. Then we had to document the production process and footage. We each filled it out on our own and we screenshotted the footage.

February 11th 2019

The producer sometimes gets to decide on if they need a re-shoot, so beforehand me and Jade checked the footage to if we had to take any shots again. When we were shooting the footage, we had someone else doing it, therefore most of the footage was out of focus, since we realised a bit after. However when we recorded it, we knew what we were doing, so we had it in focus. So we were bad informing the person about that, since we forgot, but when it came to use shooting we were good at it. Me and Jade also sorted the footage into folders, for which shots are good and which shots are bad and if they were INT/inside or EXT/outside. Outside of being producer, I also contributed to the editing so i could edit certain clips a certain way, so having clips of different people who attended the part doing things, so it looks like they are suspects too and then saving the dead body clip till the end, while having the detectives voice over those clips and then fades to black, so it would have more of a dramatic impact and makes you think who did it.
